Founder, Science & Technology Group
Since 2007 the Science & Technology group of the Purbeck U3A has gone from strength to strength. We started with a dozen or so members on 20th September that year, having our monthly meetings in the upstairs meeting room of Wareham Library but, after a while, the gathering interest in the group resulted in this small room proving far from adequate.
The Group Leader with the foresight to start the Science and Technology group and guide it through this formative period, was Roger Chambers.
With the increasingly huge popularity of the S&T group, it became obvious to Roger that he would have to have both more help in running the group and a larger hall in which to hold meetings. Four committee members (later to become five) volunteered to give help by organising individual meetings and “chair” them on the day, thus relieving Roger of some of his more arduous duties while he continued with booking speakers and acting as the focal point for the group. A new venue was sought and the Parish Hall, off The Quay, Wareham, was chosen for its larger size, and later Harman’s Cross Hall for its even better facilities.
Now Science & Technology membership has grown to well over a hundred - the largest Purbeck U3A group by far - but we were sad to announce in 2011 that Roger, for personal reasons, decided to step down as Group Leader.
We thank him for all his hard work over the past years and for his vision in noticing the lack of a group catering for those whose interests are in Science & Technology and his perspicacity in starting one up - and making it such a great success.
