Wareham Walking Group was established in 2004 and was initially sponsored by the British Heart Foundation. Doctors at the time felt that patients recovering from heart surgery would benefit greatly from gentle exercise. However, to walk unaccompanied was not an option. Groups were started and Wareham was one of them.
Natural England took over the sponsorship and, more recently, Macmillan Cancer Support and Ramblers became the sponsors. Wareham Walkers has become an independent group and will continue to provide stimulating and interesting walks for older people in and around Wareham in Dorset, UK.
